Finding Happiness

Happiness is defined as a pleasant feeling of contentment. Everyone desires and deserves happiness.

It can be found anywhere, at any time, and is typically influenced by circumstances; but it can also be fleeting. Many people have all of the things that should cause them to be happy, yet they are still miserable.

So, can you find happiness? Of course not.

It is not something you finds as though it was hiding under a bush or lost somewhere. It is a state of mind, not a buried treasure.

Plenty of people have very little to attribute to the fact that they are truly happy. So how did they arrive at this cheerful and content state of being?

They have decided to be happy by accepting their circumstances and embracing the things in life that are important and common to all people.

Happiness is a matter of choice, not discovery.

Tenants from hell

My neighbors of over twenty years passed away but they were tenents from hell. His home was bought by a young couple. They worked for months updating the house. I had started a speaking acquaintance with them and was let to know that they intended to rent the home once updated. I cautioned them about renting to people who might not care about leaving the property as they found it. My cautions fell on deaf ears. Soon a boisterous, loud, intimidating family moved in. There daughter was about 350 pounds. She stood at the back door and yelled and screamed before going in. The wife caught me taking out my trash and began screaming, “thief,” “thief.” The husband drove an overly used truck of unknown vintage. They littered the back yard with grills that couldn’t possibly hold coals. The interior of the house was also treated to their kind attentions. The drapes were torn down and what appeared to be paper mache streamers were attached. The front door has a life size poster of a football player and they won’t move.

Washington DC’s best known landmark: the Washington Monument

One of the world landmarks that symbolizes Washington DC in the minds of those who do not life there is the Washington Monument. Situated on the grassy Mall within sight of the White House and the US Capitol, this white marble obelisk gleams in sunlight during the day and is illuminated at night. The contrast between the red, white and blue flags fluttering nearby and the stark simplicity of the pillar of stone is a familiar site in photographs, movies and television. Even more striking is the immobile white column against a background of holiday fireworks, a display broadcast all over the US. The one landmark that brings to mind the American capitol is not one of the buildings where the business of government is accomplished but rather that simple white finger of stone.

Technology and the Adult Entertainment Industry

When the printing press was invented, it did not take long for erotic books to become popular. Both men and women would read lascivious tales and romantic novellas with gusto. As photography became more widespread, predictably the adult entertainment industry adopted the technology to take and distribute lusty pictures. With the advent of telephone and video technologies, adult entertainment companies have harnessed them into hugely profitable industries. As the internet grows and more is spread to our smartphones, the adult entertainment industry is sure to take advantage of the new technologies.

World Dictators

Kim Jong-il, Stalin, Hitler, Julius Caesar, Napoleon, Mao Zedong and other world dictators have occupied our minds and left their marks on history like scars. They fascinate us and horrify us. They are the rulers we love to hate. For the people they have ruled they have meant a mixture of “big brother” type security and absolute terror.

There is something so unique about one human holding absolute power over a nation or empire that captures our attention. To err is to be human and when one human controls everything a personal mistake becomes a world tragedy. Entire populations are exterminated, wars are waged, freedoms are torn away.

But dictators come to power through hope and fear. The people hope they will cut through politics and simply enact what the people want. But there is no room for compromise. By definition dictatorships result in massive horror. Yet we are fascinated.

Famous Movies

There are so many memorable famous movies that have been made that make a major impact on our lives. One of those movies that come to mind is “Gone with the Wind.” This movie is so compelling and filled with such raw emotion that it is hard for the viewer not to be enthralled. The eye catching scenery as we travel back in time to an era of when America was on the brink of civil war is simply breathtaking.

This movie is so captivating because it paints a perfect picture of a woman that has guts and a fiery spirit who will stop at nothing to have what she wants. The character, Scarlet O’Hara will forever go down in history as a rebellious southern belle who eventually has to fight hard to save her families plantation. In the midst of the war she wrestles with her feelings for Ashley Wilkes, who in fact is married to her dear, mild mannered and meek friend Millie. Never will there ever be another movie that so rivetingly depicts war and romance like that of “Gone with the Wind” and should be in your movie collection.

Humans created the problems that plague our treasured family vacation spots, and if we all don’t make an effort, our oceans will not be safe for sea life nor man.

The next time you are at the beach, remember to put your trash in approved receptacles and to spread the word to others about the danger of litter for our oceans.

Travelling the world

There are two ways of seeing the world, as an isolationist or as a cosmopolitan. If one is an isolationist, one is determined that there is nothing beyond his native land that he needs to see. If one is a cosmopolitan, one sees the world as connected and necessary to know. The word “cosmopolitan” comes from the Greek. The “cosmo” in cosmopolitan means literally “world” in Greek. If one is a cosmopolitan, to travel the world is necessary as one can not think of not travelling the world. If one is an isolationist and by chance of luck must travel outside of his own land, one is morose, problematical and usually says when seeing the Eiffel Tower, “we have towers like that back home.” That might be amusing in itself. The cosmopolitan sees the world as his to enjoy and chooses his destinations to broaden his horizon.

Asia

Asia is a vast continent that stretches from the borders of Europe in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east. The home of many cultures and three of the four cradles of civilization, Asia was the world’s wealthiest and most mysterious continent for much of recorded history.

Among European countries, knowledge of the western part of Asian cities was sparse until the campaigns of Alexander the Great opened the door to the continent. The eastern part of Asia remained almost entirely unknown until Marco Polo and later Dutch and Portuguese traders published accounts of their travels there.

During the 19th century, much of Asia, including India and China, was either colonized or brought into the sphere of influence of one or more European powers. Today, with its huge population and extremely low wages, Asia is making rapid gains in GDP, although it continues to lag in terms of prosperity.

Financial Investments

More novice investors have lost their collective shirts and pants and bank accounts by falling in love with a particular financial investment and not using two words: common sense. Educate yourself about personal financial investments. Hey, it’s your money. Finally, don’t invest more than you can afford to lose. If the investment is real property, will the rental income service all debts you have incurred?
